Knowing your market is extremely important to reaching your goal of serving your customers and growing your business. You might know who your ideal customer is, but to truly stand out from other ventures you need to know everything about them – how to reach them; the challenges they face and what they want from you. The first step to developing this knowledge is by conducting a target market analysis.

A market analysis is an assessment of any given market that includes both qualitative and quantitative research. It not only helps you understand both your audience and your competition better, it also reassures investors of the position of your startup. It’s simply must-have knowledge.

That’s why for this edition of the Startup Success Series, we spoke with an expert panel about market analysis and everything that comes with it. We welcomed Investment Manager @ Rampersand Chris Quirk; Co-Founder & Director @ NOW Hannah Gee and Founder @ Sked Social & Galileo Ventures Hugh Stephens.

Navigating your way through the maze that is available government support for your startup can be daunting. You have to stay on top of eligibility criteria, competing priorities, looming deadlines and a seemingly never-ending mountain of paperwork. It’s no small task, especially for first-time and early-stage founders who have never been through this process before, and likely have 100 other things to think about.

That’s why for this edition of the Startup Success Series, we welcomed Dr Rita Choueiri and Jonathon Larosa from accounting and advisory firm William Buck to give a presentation on everything you need to know about available government grants and incentives for your startup.

Every startup’s first major challenge is finding their initial customers and reaching out to your audience can be a daunting prospect. How do you spread the word and find your ideal clients?

Defining your customers, conducting research into their habits and setting a communications strategy that conveys the value of your offering is all part of the process of going from ‘no-one knows us’ to your first 100 customers. But once you’re there, you have even more to think about. Dividing your audience into segments and defining your ideal customer profile will also play into every aspect of your startup and the service/product it offers.

That’s why for this edition of the Startup Success Series, we spoke with an expert panel to provide advice for first-time founders and early-stage startups on customer discovery strategies, research tips and techniques and how to gain insights from your existing customer base. We were joined by Katelyn Sharratt, Learning and Innovation Manager at the Wade Institute with Startup Vic’s Director of Programs and Partnerships Poppy Trewhella hosting.
