ecosphere is an uplifting VR nature documentary series by the award winning Melbourne studio PHORIA. It is a one-of-a-kind free experience and is available to download now for Oculus Quest and Oculus Go.
Immerse yourself in the wildest places on earth and meet the humans protecting our most precious wildlife. Explore the great savannahs of Kenya, discover the ancient jungles of Borneo and dive into the rich coral reefs of Raja Ampat. Encounter elephants, orangutans, manta rays and some incredible humans, all in stunning cinematic Virtual Reality (VR). Watch the trailer here.
Produced in partnership with WWF, Silverback Films and Oculus, this groundbreaking series is narrated by Emmy Award winning actress Anna Friel – known for her titular role in ‘Marcella’ and her conservation work with WWF.
ecosphere gently guides viewers through some of nature’s most fragile and diverse ecosystems, highlighting indigenous and community-led efforts to protect our planet. The series features never-before-seen cinematic 5.7k stereoscopic VR footage at 60fps, shot with the latest pre-production 3D-180 cameras. Custom VR stabilising technology allowed filming to take place in incredibly technically challenging environments — from the air and deep into the ocean. The immersive episodes are housed in an impressive, state-of-the-art 3D interface, featuring a stunning 3D earth and beautifully animated microcosms of each location.
Joseph Purdam, Director/Producer/Editor and co-founder of PHORIA spoke to the boundary-defying nature of ecosphere:
“ecosphere harnesses emerging technology at the fringe of image capture and headset playback capabilities. Our aim is to transport our viewers physically and emotionally into the natural world through VR. Working with world class partners, we wanted to push the limits of quality and accessibility for immersive documentary filmmaking. Our production team worked wonders to ensure we could complete the project in 9 months.”
He continued: “ecosphere will open the hearts of viewers to the beauty of the natural world. These diverse stories and voices are on the frontline of community-led environmental activism. It’s a privilege that ecosphere can help raise awareness for rewilding efforts and reveal just how nature and humanity can co-exist together, in harmony.”
